Technical Support

What We’ll Do

We warranty adopted and granted systems for one year after the date the system was received, provided that the customer did not break the hardware. Software support is limited to Xubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 10.04. We will add hardware purchased in our store to systems adopted or granted from Free Geek for no cost. Adoption volunteers must take the Adoption Class in order to receive tech support.

Systems purchased in the store include a 90-day hardware warranty. We will add hardware purchased in our store to systems purchased at Free Geek for no cost, and will provide an initial software update to ensure your system is up to date and can play Multimedia content such as DVD’s.

All support for systems out of warranty is $10 an issue. We will provide support for systems out of warranty for 1 year after the warranty ends.

When We Can Do It

Free Geek tech support is available on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12 PM to 5.45 PM. We are closed for lunch between 1-1.30pm

How to Get It

To receive tech support, be sure your computer is covered by our policy above, and do one of the following:

  • Call (503)232-9350 and press option 6. If your call is not answered (you call outside of tech support hours, or the support techs are busy) please leave a message with your name, phone number, and a short description of your problem. We will get back to you as soon as we have finished helping other customers.
  • Send an email to our Tech Support team (support at freegeek dot org). Be sure to include contact information and a short description of what is not working properly.
  • Stop in! We’d be happy to help you in person. See “When We’ll Do It” above to find out when and how. Keep in mind, also, that you may need to leave your box in order for us to fix it and that we may be helping other customers at the time your arrive. It is never a bad idea to call us and see how quickly walk-in service is taking that day. Please note we only need the computer itself. We do not need monitors, power cables, laptop bags. etc.
  • Please Note

Tech Support’s purpose is to ensure repair and replacements for broken hardware under warranty, and to get you unstuck with basic configuration and usage issue. Tech Support is not a free tutoring service. If you are new to using a computer, please consider taking one of our classes.
