Free Geek is a great place to gain work experience in areas that translate well into real-world jobs while helping your community and environment. Alongside our numerous casual volunteer opportunities, we also offer a variety of unpaid internships for those 16 and older. Our volunteer interns can expect a set schedule, the opportunity to learn valuable job skills, and letters of reference after successful completion. While there are many different opportunities available, right now we’re highlighting a few key areas where we could immediately benefit from volunteer help (and benefit you, of course):

 

Printer Testing Internship – Interns in this track will gain valuable experience learning how to test printers & basic troubleshooting and how to research resale potential for printers and deconstructed printer parts. Office Support Internship – Here you will learn and practice skills that quickly translate to office employment situations including scheduling volunteers, answering questions about Free Geek, and preparing materials for orientations. Laptop Eval Volunteer Internship

Job Title: Laptop Evaluation Intern 
Hours Weekly: 4-8/hours weekly 
Days Per Week: 1-2/weekly 
Length of Internship: Minimum 2 months 
Training: Orientation and Training provided 
Free Geek Supervisor: Sean Ellefson, Reuse Program Coordinator — Laptop Build

Responsibilities

  • Regularly attend Laptop Evaluation shifts and trainings
  • Participate in feedback surveys before and upon completion of the internship
  • Offer feedback and suggestions on improvements to procedures and documentation
  • Work in Free Geek’s Laptop Program, and help to fulfill our mission of Reuse and Responsible Recycling
  • Receive training in how to work with laptop hardware and Linux as a precursor for entry into our Laptop Build program

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with casual computer use is desirable
  • An interest in expanding your understanding of computer hardware and software
  • Enthusiasm for reducing electronic waste and community building

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects with minimal supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.

Benefits:

This internship offers exposure to a wide variety of laptop hardware, training in troubleshooting and refurbishing laptops, and experience working with free and open source software. Interns will learn how to identify different generations of computer hardware, and install the necessary components to ready these machines for our Laptop Build program. Successful completion of this internship will qualify interns for immediate access into Free Geek’s Post-Build Laptop program.

This position is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable job skills, make a difference for people and the environment, and make connections in the community. Active volunteers are eligible to receive a 20% discount on items in the Free Geek Thrift Store and to become a member of the First Tech Credit Union. Free Geek also offers free computer classes to volunteers. In addition, interns can choose to receive a free computer after volunteering 24 hours in our internship program.

Hardware Donations Internship

Job Title: Hardware Donations Volunteer Intern
Hours Weekly: 15 hours/week

Days Per Week: 3 – 4 days/week
Length of Internship: Minimum 3 months
Training: Orientation and Training Provided
Free Geek Supervisor: Staff Collective

Responsibilities

  • Assist hardware donors
  • Identify, triage, and process incoming hardware
  • Teach new volunteers to process incoming hardware

Desired Qualifications

  • Self-starter/proactive
  • Detail-oriented
  • Able to work with a diversity of people
  • Able to regularly lift 40 lbs.

In addition:

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress and maintain a positive attitude in a relatively chaotic setting. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions, but will be able to work on projects almost entirely without supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.

Additionally, volunteers are welcome to use the terminals in the classroom any time there’s not a class going on to check their email or do research on the web. Volunteers are eligible to take any Free Geek classes for free. Active volunteers are also eligible for a 20 percent discount on equipment in the Free Geek Thrift Store. Volunteering at Free Geek also makes you eligible to become a member of First Tech Credit Union.
