Eric Winger, local blogger and volunteer extraordinaire, participated in the 2012 MLK Weekend of Service, sponsored by Hands On Greater Portland and United Way, by disassembling printers with a volunteer group in Free Geek’s Recycling department. You can read about his experiences here.

The Oregonian reported today on the Portland City Council resolution to send the city’s office computers to Free Geek. Previously, the City was giving its computers to a private company. Up to 1,000 more computers per year will grace Free Geek’s facility, thanks to the agreement, which was sponsored by City Commissioner Dan Saltzman. In return, Free Geek will develop an outreach plan to Portland students who need computers.
