COMPUTERS FOR KIDSComputers for Kids is a FREE GEEK project sponsored by Computer Bits Magazine (here is the article by Dennis Bridges that started it all). CforK is designed to help bridge the digital divide for young people in the Portland Metropolitan Area and provides a chance for youth to perform community service. Youth also gain valuable life and technology skills, and after completion of the program they receive a refurbished computer as well as a Certificate of Technical Achivement. Youth are recommended by organizations working with "at-risk" youth and come to FreeGeek with staff members from that organization to attend classes. If you are not affiliated with any youth organization, you are still welcome to volunteer here at FreeGeek, but we ask that youth under 16 years of age are chaperoned by an adult. You will find more information here. At this point the CforK is running as a Youth Build program, where we have 4 groups in various stages of building computers for others and themselves. After completing the program, youth will attend a 3 hour Adoption class and get to take their computer home. We always recommend that at least one adult per family attends the Adoption class with the youth. ![]() The next scheduled CforK term will start the beginning of September. Computers for Kids is currently looking for volunteers who are interested in teaching classes for youth involved in our program. Volunteers do not necessarily need Linux experience, as FreeGeek can train you to know the necessary stuff. If you have any questions, please contact Liane (CforK coordinator) @volunteer@freegeek.org.
