Hardware Donations Internship

Salary/Benefits
  • Wages are $11.55 per hour.
  • Length of job: Approximately 28 weeks
Work Hours
  • Part-time, 24 hours per week.
  • Four days per week or five shorter days, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30am to 7:30pm, some evening or morning meetings, with some flexibility

  • It is required that applicants take a tour of our facility (to learn about our culture and better understand the organization). Tours are offered every day Tues. - Sat. at noon and 6pm, and last about 30 minutes. Please submit your essay to the person working at reception at the completion of the tour. *** Current Volunteers are exempt from taking the tour.
  • Applications for this position are due by November 28, 2008.
  • We expect to hire for this position by December 5, 2008.
  • Please note that internships are not a path towards full-time employment.


Do you love making order out of chaos, working on your feet, learning about all kinds of computer equipment, meeting people, and working with volunteers? Do you know someone who likes putting away lots of random stuff? If you're looking for experience in coordinating volunteers this might be the internship for you. Here's what we're looking for and how to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Manage flow of gizmos through the hardware donations receiving area.
  • Teach Adoption volunteers basic intake procedures.
  • Communicate proactively with other Free Geek staff and volunteers about receiving area needs.
  • Teach basic hardware vocabulary and Free Geek's system evaluation process to Build volunteers as needed (we will train you).
  • Ensure that receiving is well integrated with Free Geeks production and sales areas.
  • Attend and be active in reuse committee meetings.
  • Assist in training your replacement at end of internship.
  • Help other areas of Free Geek's operations as needed.
  • Give tours of Free Geek to potential volunteers and donors.

Required Skills

  • Aptitude for and enjoyment of helping people
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated, and able to eventually work with little supervision
  • Detail-oriented
  • Strong organizational skills (you like to put stuff in order)
  • Able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Strong teaching skills

In Addition

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress in a somewhat chaotic setting and maintain a positive attitude. The candidate will not be afraid to ask questions but will be able to upkeep the area almost entirely without supervision. The candidate will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes. Fluency in Spanish is a plus, though not required.
