Computers for Kids conducted the first orientation class for the recipients of its free computer systems. Three families selected by the Child Care Division of the Portland YMCA were given free computers and several members of the families were shown how to use them. Look for more releases of computers in the near future.

FREE GEEK received a sustainability award from Sustainable Northwest. FREE GEEK was named a Founder of a New Northwest along with 23 others including community activists, teachers, business people, scientists, and government agency personnel. FREE GEEK will be profiled in a book published by Sustainable Northwest in May 2003.

FREE GEEK is proud to announce our latest project. Computers for Kids is giving free computers and education to at risk youth in the Portland Metro area. Kids are selected to recieve assistance by the Child Services Division of the Portland YMCA. Computer for Kids is sponsered by Computer Bits Magazine

Wednesday, September 18, 2002
FREE GEEK provided the hardware and workspace for a group of media activists to build 75 Linux computers for Ecuador. The computers, along with 50 color monitors, were loaded on a truck today and sent down to Oakland, CA to be loaded on a ship bound for South America. This project was coordinated by the folks at Portland Indymedia. Additional computers were provided by the Alameda County Com uter Resource Center in Oakland, CA.

FREE GEEK presented at the Association of Oregon Recyclers Annual Conference in Seaside, Oregon. FREE GEEK also provided all the technical support for the conference.

FREE GEEK donated 110 monitors, keyboards and mice along with a dozen laser printers to Mercy Corps. They are shipping them to a needy school in El Savador.

In an effort to better serve the needs of the community FREE GEEK is changing our operating hours. FREE GEEK is now open from 11:00am to 7:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, closed Sunday and Monday.

FREE GEEK celebrated two years at the Community Technology Center with a block party extravaganza, with live music, food, a raffle and, a huge used computer sidewalk sale. The event was a great success: we raised over $2,500, and a good time was had by all. Thanks to all the great bands that played for us and all the wonderful volunteers that helped make the event so much fun. See you next year!

FREE GEEK participated in the Earth Day 2002 Celebration at Environmental Middle School in Ladd's Addition. Great turn-out and lots of fun for all involved.

FREE GEEK donated 135 monitors, keyboards, mice and 12 laser printers to Mercy Corps as part of a 250-computer shipment to Lebanon. The donated systems are going to schools and community centers through out the country.
