It's great to hear 12.04 is working for you, Daviey. While we're not installing it on Freekboxen going forward, we will still make the CDs available for those who want to go that route. If you do install it, you can always get software support from Ubuntu Oregon. They are extremely enthusiastic about helping people use their computers.

I'm disappointed that Free Geek left Ubuntu behind although at first the change from Gnome to Unity took a bit to absorb I ultimately found the Unity desktop to increase my productivity. In fact you guys also donated computers to my old school which chose to manually upgrade to 12.04.

As a volunteer I was never even told about the switch you guys were making until just the last month and I subscribe to the mailing lists... Seems like you could have done a survey on the mailing lists... notably my FreekBox runs Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04 just fine.

Be a little more democratic next time?

It seems like a lot of people have had the same experience as you (including several Free Geek staffers who were trying out Unity in preparation for a possible change). There was a lot of debate about the Unity interface and if it would work for our particular user base, but we ultimately decided it would be better to stick with something that better aligned with current common conventions (although even that's changing with the new Windows 8 interface and OSX moving toward a more iOS approach).

Thanks for the thoughts on Unity. I definitely recommend people give it a try, just to see if it works for them.

We love you too!

We haven't played around with Gnome 2 on Ubuntu ourselves, but it looks like you're not alone. Apparently there's a project called GNOMEbuntu that aims to do just that. This video also purports to show you how to install Gnome 2 on your desktop.

Hey Ric,

While we're not able to support organizations that want to use the Free Geek name at this point, we are happy to encourage other similar organizations around the world. You can find out more about how to start up your own Free Geek-like non-profit on our Wiki (which happens to be an excellent source of all sorts of information.

Do you know if Gnome-2 is available with any of the Ubuntu releases?
I have tried Gnome-Classic, and it doesn't appear to be up to snuff.

Great job everyone!

Thanks,
Mark
