We offer a wide variety of free community education classes that demystify technology.

For many, technology is shrouded in a veil of mystery. What some are able to do with a mouse and keyboard borders the line between the ordinary and extraordinary -- some may even call it magic. However, technology is not maintained by wizards and witchcraft, but by creative and skilled architects that work to make your experience as seamless and pain-free as possible. The skills required are not found in a mythical tome of old, but can be learned through our many FREE Community Education classes.

Here at Free Geek, we offer a wide and diverse range of free educational opportunities that demystify technology and empower our community with the skills they need to succeed in all areas of digital life.

We have classes for people of all ages and skill levels.  In our basic digital literacy classes, we help individuals reach their own goals with technology; in our more specialized offerings, we foster the imagination of our community members, spark their interest, and build confidence that anyone can learn and work with computers. All of our classes are open to the public. No experience is necessary and everyone is welcome!

Here are the types of things you can learn at Free Geek:

  • Linux Basics: Learn the basics of using Linux, the free and open source computer operating system!
  • Hardware and DIY: From laptops to Raspberry Pis to CNC Mills, learn all about computer hardware, gain troubleshooting skills, and become a do-it-yourselfer!
  • Privacy and Security: Explore themes of convenience and the trade-offs it brings, how to spot digital threats, and navigate the internet without moving under a rock!
  • Programming: Learn the fundamentals of programming and building blocks for several languages, including Python and JavaScript.
  • Creative Media and Design: Learn about digital media tools, from 3D animation to graphic design to audio and more! All levels of experience are welcome.

Whether you’re looking to try something new, rekindle your love of digital arts, or master programming to take that next step in your career, we have the perfect opportunity for you. Last year we served 2,085 students, with over 4,821 classroom hours of instruction. Many of our classes come from partnerships with other community organizations; most classes are led by our knowledgeable and experienced volunteers!

A core principle of our mission is to provide education that demystifies technology and empowers people to realize their full potential. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for students of all levels. You don’t need to be a Grand Wizard to learn programming -- sign up and take a class today!
