Meet Ross, a recipient from our partnership with SNAP to provide computers to people currently looking for professional development!

Meet Ross

Ross came to WorkSource Lane in January 2020 with limited work experience and no computer or typing experience. As a younger man, he worked in a relative’s donut shop and sno-cone truck. He told us how he much he enjoyed seeing how people loved the sweet treats he created.

Ross let us know that he had spent years out of the labor market and had no experience with planning an effective job search, writing a resume or a cover letter. He needed hands-on assistance to use a computer to complete his iMatchSkills® registration and to search the internet. When asked what job skills he most wanted to focus on, his response was  “everything!” With his enthusiasm and drive to learn, Ross put in hours in the WorkSource Lane lobby learning to type and developing internet skills. He also worked with a 2nd STEP career coach to revise his initial resume to match the types of jobs he was seeking.

Within a month he had found a position and become part of a crew. Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic led to layoffs and Ross lost his job, just a few months after starting it. He and his partner have just had a baby and Ross is focused on improving his computer and internet skills so that he can obtain a job with greater financial stability for his family. With everyday access to their own computer, Ross and his partner have great potential to take online training courses, access free courses, email their STEP coaches and search for jobs at all times of the  day.
