We are happy to offer a quiet space for you to use a computer while visiting Free Geek.
By using this space, you agree to follow the Computer Lab Rules, the Acceptable Use Policy and the Free Geek Code of Conduct.

1. Computer Lab Rules

  • The lab is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Return to the Front Desk at 5:30 p.m. to check out.
  • An access pass is required from the Front Desk.
  • Please be mindful of the 2 hour time limit. PLEASE LOG OUT AT THE END OF YOUR SESSION.
  • There is no printing here. You may request 10 pages of printing per day from the Front Desk.
  • Be quiet and respectful of others in the space.
  • No food or drink in the Computer Lab.
  • Use the main exit when leaving Free Geek.
  • Read over the acceptable use policy below before using this computer.

2. Acceptable Use Policy

While Free Geek encourages creativity and free speech within our walls, and on our networks, we also understand that in order to keep a communications system that's safe and comfortable to use, and therefore encourages community, we need guidelines concerning the acceptable use of our computers. The following behaviors are not acceptable and will warrant disciplinary measures:

  • Using our network for malicious or illegal purposes, including but not limited to:
    • Breaking into our network or others’ networks with malicious intent.
    • Flaming or threatening emails to staff, volunteers, or our community.
    • Goading, baiting, or bullying on our web presence.
    • Illegal activities.
    • Sending spam and/or threats to Free Geek email accounts.
    • Sending spam from our network, via email, chat room, irc, or other protocols.
    • Using our computers to deface websites (e.g. Wikipedia).
  • Accessing material considered by the Free Geek community to be inappropriate at Free Geek, including but not limited to:
    • Browsing porn sites (and/or printing them).
  • Downloading content (e.g. music, movies, or TV shows) illegally.

3. General Conduct Policy

Safer Space Policy
We strive to make Free Geek a welcoming, safe and comfortable space for everyone (volunteers, staff, donors, visitors) and appreciate your best efforts to treat all others with respect and understanding. Thank you for doing your part to make this a safer learning space for everyone regardless of their background, experience, and abilities. If you see anyone engaging in any of the below activities, please let a staff member know so we can follow up appropriately. The following are not acceptable behaviors at Free Geek:

  • Attitudes, jokes, and language that are discriminatory or demeaning on the basis of race, class, gender identity, sex, age, spoken language, nationality, culture, physical appearance, sexual orientation, or ability/disability.
  • Acts or threats of violence, including intimidation, harassment, and/or coercion.
  • Sexual harassment.
  • Theft.

General Health & Safety Policies

  • Smoking - Smoking is prohibited in the building and within 10 feet of any door, openable window, or vent of the building. Smoking is only permitted in the designated smoking area outside. This includes e-cigarettes and vaporizers.
  • Drugs & Alcohol - Illicit drugs are prohibited on Free Geek property. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on company property during working hours except as specifically authorized by management. You are also prohibited from working under the influence of any prescription, or other, drug that may impair your ability to work in a safe and effective manner.
  • Protective Equipment & Clothing - Eye protection, hearing protection, and gloves may also be required in designated areas. Free Geek supplies these items if needed.
  • Footwear - Closed toed shoes are required when working in the warehouse and designated areas.
  • Accidents, near misses, and first aid - Staff, volunteers, contractors, truck drivers and visitors are required to report all accidents, near misses, and first aid incidents to the Front Desk or the Executive Director.
  • Guns - Guns are not allowed on Free Geek property except when carried by law enforcement.
  • Emergency Procedures - To report a fire or emergency, contact any Free Geek employee or dial “0” from any phone to contact the Front Desk.
  • Forklift Safety - Be aware and cautious of forklift traffic.
  • Animals - Only service animals are allowed on Free Geek property.
  • Lifting - Please utilize proper lifting techniques.
  • Keep exits and pathways clear - Safely stack computers, printers, and boxes without blocking aisles, exits, or safety features.
  • Handling electronics - Wash hands thoroughly after handling computer components. Don’t bring food or open beverage containers into the work areas.
  • Horseplay - Don’t run or engage in horseplay.
  • Fragrances - There are many folks at Free Geek who are sensitive to scented products, such as perfumes and colognes. Please respect this by refraining from wearing such products while here.
