Join the crew · Volunteer at Free Geek
Keep tech out of landfills. Put it in someone's hands.
Every laptop you test, every desktop you teardown, every monitor you check — it's one less piece of e-waste, and one more tool for someone in our community. Come spend a shift with us.

Where you can plug in today
Two ways to volunteer right now. Pick the one that fits your time and interest — both make a direct, measurable impact.
Warehouse Volunteer
Help us process incoming donations. Hands-on, no tech experience needed — we'll show you the ropes.
- Computer teardown for recycling
- E-waste sorting and categorization
- Keeping the floor moving
Reuse Volunteer
Get your hands on the machines that go back into the community. More technical, more rewarding.
- Laptop & desktop refurbishment

- Logging and labeling tested gear

How onboarding works
Every volunteer goes through the same path. Reuse volunteers add one extra training shift along the way.
Apply
Fill out the short application below. We'll reach out to schedule your orientation.
Orientation
An in-person orientation at our space. Covers Free Geek's mission, policies, safety, and what to expect on the floor.
Start volunteering
Warehouse: book any open shift on signup.com (link emailed after orientation).
Reuse: one paired training shift first to learn testing, label printing, and work logging — then book any open Reuse slot.
Volunteer application
Apply to volunteer
One form for all roles — Warehouse and Reuse. Takes about 3 minutes.
On the horizon
What's next, Fall 2026
We're rebuilding the volunteer program that COVID interrupted, and we're getting ready for a big move. Here's how you can be part of what's next.
Help us move
We're relocating to our new building and we'll need all the hands we can get — packing, hauling, unpacking, setting up. If you can lend a few hours, this is the single biggest way to help us this year.
Internships
Structured, longer-term opportunities for folks who want a deeper dive into reuse and refurbishment. Paused until our new building is ready.
Questions
Frequently asked
Do I need tech experience to volunteer?
Nope. Warehouse shifts need zero experience — if you can lift a box and use a screwdriver, you're qualified. Reuse shifts are more technical, but we train everyone from scratch.
What's the minimum age?
Volunteers 15 and older can sign up on their own (a parent/guardian waiver is required for anyone under 18). Volunteers 14 and younger are welcome to come along with a parent or guardian and share a shift spot — just let us know on the application.
Does volunteering at Free Geek count for community service hours?
Yes. Volunteer hours can count toward school service-learning, community service, and similar requirements. If you have paperwork that needs signing, bring it with you and let staff know at the start of your shift so we can track your time accurately.
How do I sign up?
Every volunteer starts with the same step: fill out the application form. We'll email you back to schedule an in-person orientation. After orientation, Warehouse volunteers get a signup.com link to book shifts. Reuse volunteers do one paired training shift, then get their signup.com link.
What should I wear?
Closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a little dusty. We'll provide a t-shirt after your first full shift.
Is there a free computer program for volunteers?
Not currently, the structured free-computer program is paused. If a genuine need comes up while you're volunteering with us, talk to staff and we'll see how we can help.
How do I sign up for an internship?
Internships are paused until our new building is ready in Fall 2026. Contact us for more information.
Ready to spend a shift with us?
