Tech Support is available Tuesday-Saturday from 10am to 1:30pm and 2:30 to 5:45pm (closed 1:30 to 2:30pm).
We provide technical support on most systems obtained from Free Geek, provided (a) no major changes to hardware have been made and (b) the system has the same operating system as at the time of purchase.
Free Geek provides technical support for:
- 6 months for computers purchased from The Free Geek Store.
- 1 year for computers obtained through the Hardware Grants, Volunteer, or Plug into Portland programs.

Out of Warranty Support: We can provide support for systems one year after the end of the warranty period. This extended support is offered at $30 plus the cost of parts.
Backup and Transfer of Data: Our technicians can backup and transfer data from your donatable items before you hand them over. There is a $30 fee per hard drive for this service, plus the cost of a storage device if you need us to provide one.
Linux Install: We can perform an install of Linux Mint on your non-Free Geek computer system for $40. This includes a backup of data from your old system, restoration of data onto your new Linux OS, system testing, and 6 months of tech support.

I am someone who uses a computer but is not technologically proficient to solve some of the problems that arise. Having a resource that I was able turn to for a recent mechanical difficulty was a godsend. Like the public library, you are a force for good in the world!

To receive technical support, ensure that your computer meets the requirements outlined above. Then contact us one of the following ways, making sure to leave your name, contact information, and a short description of your problem.
Reach Free Geek Tech Support by calling (503) 232-9350 and selecting option 6. If you call outside of tech support hours or the techs are currently busy, please leave a voicemail.

You can drop off your system at the Front Desk during Free Geek’s open hours. You may be asked to leave your machine as we process systems on a first-come, first-serve basis. Depending on current demand and the nature of the work required, it may take several days to resolve your issue.
We offer classes that will teach you how to set up, operate, and download software for your new Free Geek computer.
