Plug into Portland

Are you a student? Need a computer?

If you volunteer in your community, you can earn a computer from Free Geek!

What is Plug into Portland?

Digital access is essential to nearly every aspect of society. We call the growing gap in access to technology the digital divide. It encompasses the economic, educational, and social inequalities between those who have computers and Internet access and those who do not. Lack of digital access has a direct impact on the ability of students to achieve their full academic potential. Plug into Portland was created to help close the digital divide for Portland-area students.

Who is eligible?

This program is available only to K-12 students in the Portland metro area. This includes public school, private school, and home-school students.

To be eligible, your volunteer service must be completed within the last year at a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit, school, or a local library. Students within families are welcome to pool their hours to earn one computer.

To receive the computer, all Plug into Portland students must attend "Getting Started with your Free Geek Computer" at our location. In this class, you'll pick up your computer, set it up, and learn about Free Geek's Tech Support policies. You'll also learn about the operating system, Linux Mint, including key vocabulary, system settings, how to download new software, and where to find additional resources.

What kind of computer will you receive?

Plug into Portland participants receive a desktop computer or laptop that runs the Linux Mint operating system and one-year warranty with tech support. This computer will include:

  • i3 or better processor
  • 4GB of RAM
  • USB mouse
  • For desktops: Speakers, LCD monitor, keyboard, and necessary cords
